Publisher's Note WowzaIt is so unbelievably sweltering hot. I can't remember it ever being this hot so early in the season. And those afternoon rain showers have been full blown, rumbling thunderstorms. My home was one of those caught in the turmoil the week of June 16th when trees fell on several homes in the Edgewood and Park Street areas. If this in any indication of things to come, it's going to be a bumpy summer. And a very scary one considering the number of hurricanes forecast and the extent of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The impact of the disaster in the Gulf on the eco-system and the people of the area is a heartbreaking situation. Land and wildlife conservation issues have always been important to me and thus a focus of this publication. We have, over the years, brought you articles featuring various local organizations such as the Riverkeeper and White Oak Plantation ; and now, in this issue, the North Florida Land Trust. We take a look at important conservation projects they are working on and how you can help. We all can make a difference. I heard a great quote recentlyIf you think you're too small to make a difference, then you've never been in the dark with a mosquito. Also in this issue we feature the state of the art First Coast No More Homeless Pets ( FCNMHP ) clinic, whose mission is to help end pet homelessness and prevent needless deaths of dogs and cats through free and low cost spay and neuter programs. Again, you can help: Their annual Art Unleashed fund- raiser event is coming up on August 26. And last but not leastour series on family values. Who gets to be a couple? It seems to be a never ending debate and everyone has an opinion. I read a quote on Facebook by a Jennifer O'dea that struck a cord: Larry King is getting his 8th divorce, Elizabeth Taylor is possibly getting married for the 9th time, Jesse James and Tiger Woods are screwing everything, but same sex marriage is going to destroy the institution of marriage? REALLY?? Now, that certainly provides food for thought. $8 in Duval and St. Johns Counties or $14 out of area.
